Spring–My Favorite Season

Spring–My Favorite Season

Spring is just around the corner beginning this year on March 20th. The Baby Boomer bets if you took a survey, most would respond that Spring was their favorite season. One thing’s for sure, it’s my favorite season. Why?

Well, for me Spring represents the time of my life when I was growing up in Arlington “back in the day” when life was so much fun and carefree with little stress or strain and certainly no real responsibilities being very well taken care of by my folks.

Spring also reminds me of a “beginning” so to speak. Not only the beginning of my life, but the time of year where everything begins to grow again after the Winter doldrums. For me this Winter was particularly rough. It was really cold, dark, and although we didn’t have a lot of snow, we had far too much for the Baby Boomer. When looking at all the trees without their leaves within The Compound I see a starkness and a ghoulish feeling seems to come over me. My body doesn’t enjoy extremes anymore and doesn’t do well in the cold of Winter or the heat of Summer. Being in the Winter of my life, Winter reminds me of how mortal I am and that does frighten me. I’m not a fan of Winter and I truly doubt you are either.

Having sprung forward over the weekend is the first sign Spring is just around the corner. Getting that extra hour of daylight puts a little spring in my step. This week when heading out in the mornings to get Master M, I noticed a number of the flowering trees beginning to bloom. I’ve also seen a number of jonquils popping up brightening the landscape with their golden yellow color. It won’t be long before the Bradford Pear trees will be in their full lustrous bloom. Yes, the trees will begin to show color again as their leaves begin to grow and the grass which has been dormant for so long will again grow and be so green. I love the colors of Spring when all the flowering trees come into full bloom with the Double Blooming Pink Cherry Tree being my favorite. Spring–my favorite season!

Here at The Compound during Spring we begin to enjoy the outdoors again. We have a number of spots outside where we’re able to sit or rock and enjoy the sights and sounds that come along with Spring. I particularly enjoy the early morning singing provided by the many species of birds who make their home over our ten acres. I also look forward to the wildlife who romp through the grounds especially the deer. One thing’s for sure, I’m not a fan of snakes and we’ve been fortunate enough to fend them off by applying an organic compound around our perimeter which gives off an odor they don’t like after having two of our “pups” bitten early on both having survived the dreadful ordeal. Spring–my favorite season!

Spring is also a time to begin grilling out again. Folks, there’s nothing like the taste of food which has been grilled out and we run the gamut when it comes to experimentation on the grill although some of our experiments have proven not to be very successful. I do believe, though, we’ll keep trying until we get it right. Spring–my favorite season!

We open the pool and pool house each Spring and enjoy all that the pool offers. I will admit, having a pool is somewhat like owning a boat where the two happiest days of a boat owner are the day you purchase the boat and the day you sell the boat. Pools require a lot of your time and maintenance, but our Master M, and I’d say, our Baby Bear do really enjoy the water. We have an outdoor kitchen on the pool deck and, while La Bear and the Baby Boomer leave the chores of the pool to The King, we enjoy sitting comfortably under the porch by the pool where I might enjoy an adult beverage, or two, or even maybe three! Spring–my favorite season!

Hey, we’re very fortunate to have found and fallen into The Compound four years ago and we certainly enjoy the peace and serenity the property offers. Other than describing what Spring means to me, the main reason for this post is to say La Bear suggested we open our home not only once again to a group from our Washington-Lee High School Class of 1970 (that’s 55 years ago), but to those who the Baby Boomer worked with for the years he was at Giant Food.

We haven’t quite decided when to hold the event for our Giant friends thinking sometime in July, but believe we’ve nailed down the W-L event for Saturday, June 14th, from 1-6PM so be looking for a “save the date” announcement. We really want everyone to make the effort to attend and enjoy the festivities.

So, please come and enjoy what The Compound has to offer knowing the pool will be open and awaiting for you to hop on in as we get together to have fun reflecting and reminiscing with 60’s music playing in the background. How ’bout some burgers, dogs, and fried chicken with all the fixin’s along with a vast array of beverages for your enjoyment. The only thing you need to bring is yourself and your pleasing personality along with either your spouse, significant other, son or daughter, or just another classmate.

Spring–my favorite season!!
